PLX-BMT as an Alternative to Bone Marrow
Transplantation (BMT)
PLX-BMT (PLacental eXpanded
mesenchymal stromal cells) is being developed as an allogeneic,
off the shelf product that needs no matching to supplement the hematopoietic
stem cells (HSCs) contained in umbilical cord blood
(UCB) with the goal of improving the effectiveness
of engraftments of these HSCs and shortening patient
recovery time.
The differentiating factor for PLX-BMT versus
traditional BMTs is that patients do not need to
wait several weeks for stem cells to grow in a
culture, possibly further jeopardizing their health.
PLX-BMT is ready for use immediately upon arrival at
the hospital where it is administered to the patient
a few hours prior to the UCB injection to improve
the engraftment process. Additionally, multiple
PLX-BMT injections may be able to “boost” engraftment
of the HSCs.
The Market for PLX
BMT
PLX-BMT targets a $2 billion market and is intended to resolve the
global shortfall of matched tissue for bone marrow
transplantation (BMT) by improving the engraftment
of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) contained in
umbilical cord blood (UCB).
Pluristem believes they have the solution for
this unmet need in PLX-BMT. In preclinical studies to
date, PLX-BMT has significantly improved the
engraftment of UCB HSCs by up to 500% over controls.
The results pave the way towards using UCB instead
of bone marrow transplants for adult patients.
